Today we live in a world where the probability of destroying earth totally by man-made disaster is much greater than nature's fury.
If two big countries go for each other with nuclear arsenal, no one on either side nor those on standby will live to tell the story. Pity then so much wasteful expenditure to make and stock so much nuclear arsenal that can completely destroy mother earth. As one country expands its stock of nuclear weapons, then other countries follow suit as a defense strategy.
Probably the nuclear age will bring another stage of cold war. There is no point in firing the first shot, as there will be return shots making total destruction on both sides. This kind of warfare pollutes the soil and water making earth uninhabitable. Why is a cold war a greater possibility than a nuclear war?
For instance, one of the fasted buildups of the recent decade is China. China's change and rebuilding has made its cities unrecognizable in comparison a decade before. China would not like to lose this infrastructure to a natural or man-made disaster. If North Korea expands its nuclear arsenal China will do the same. If Pakistan pegs it up, so will India. As countries play offense, others play defense and thus the nuclear arsenal around the world expands diverting money away from public goods and services. Money spent on nuclear arsenal is a sunk cost; it will sit there doing nothing (hopefully), or if used (not hopefully) it will be the fury of man. In a sense, nuclear containment, other than for energy, makes much sense.
Terrorism is a grave incident facing the world this 21st century. While terrorism is in small parcels the fear of bioterrorism is the greatest threat facing this world. Never before has the world faced a security threat of terrorists wanting to kill innocent people who did nothing wrong to them. The free world will have to pool their intelligence to prevent 9/11 type disasters or any similar bioterrorist disaster. This is one area of warfare where big guns and tanks can do not much and is no substitute for good intelligence. While technology is a great help in combating terrorism, unfortunately it is also a great aid to the terrorists.
