They are pulled out of school as young as 10 years old; girl children to be brides to older men. Their bodies are still not developed to be called women, but yet they are prematurely forced into womanhood with dire consequences to physical and psychological health. These are Africa's child brides.
When I look at UNICEF's annual report I see the stories of program success. In the same annual report it would be also good to see a list of countries where the law allows child brides and FGC is practiced. In the annual report UNICEF must reiterate its call for banning these dishonorable practices that impound on the rights of the girl child and women. UNICEF should report on the progress made and the initiatives that countries are making to stop these inhuman behaviors. This honest reporting affects a country's ability to attract donors and so creates incentives for making changes that improve the rights of the girl child and women in the developing world.
