Finally they said child soldiers banned by UN law as 94 countries signed a UN treaty in 2002.
Some nations hailed the text, then as a breakthrough but there has been much failure in turning the Paris treaty into action. Now we must hope that the new international agreement - Nations Pledge Not to Use Child Soldiers - commits these countries to track down and demobilize child soldiers. Once again, the UN work carries moral but no legal weight. Some think that again it may be more than empty promises. Sri Lanka is among the more than 60 countries that have approved the commitments. According to the UN at least 250,000 children are recruited as child soldiers. Donors will need to ensure adequate funding and monitoring systems to re-realize the dream of ending this social menace.
