Life experiences of knowledge build-up
My foundation training was in cost & management accounting in Sri Lanka. I was just lucky to work for the largest engineering company in Sri Lanka (Walker Sons & Co. Ltd) and particularly work closely with engineers in cost control and methods on large construction projects. At Walkers I was able to put into practice much of what I learned from my foundation education to real world engineering applications developed from design to installation. The UNDP/UNICEF experience was invaluable in the sense of its sophistication to deliver programs to developing countries on a global scale. At UNDP/UNICEF, I worked with some of the best intellectuals in the world who dedicated their lives to working for the benefit of women and children in the developing world. The global experience from UNDP/UNICEF was fascinating, particularly, working with people of so many nationalities and the transfer of knowledge to other countries. Most important, growing up in a developing country (Sri Lanka) and experiencing poverty was the best life experience of it all. On the academic side, the Masters degree in Public Administration from New York University taught me so much that I never knew before, even though I started the program at 40 years of age. I proved to many doubters that 40 was not too late for a serious university program by completing the 5-year part-time program in 2.5 years while having a full-time job at UNICEF with a load of international travel. Finally, 57 were not too late to get a diploma in financial planning from New York University. Moreover, my physical pursuits like long distance swimming, long distance running and long distance biking and teaching thousands of kids how to swim (in Sri Lanka) was another big life-experience. Therefore, that is the story of the storehouse of my knowledge. Moreover, I have a deep passion for study. In addition to keeping in touch with current events through world-class periodicals, I also continue with self-study by studying and reading books on economics, philosophy, sociology, human relations and management.
