On September 11, 2001 the World Trade Center (WTC) Towers collapsed from a terrorist attack. In the over 3,000 people that lost their lives, 109 were from Westchester, New York. The picture in this post called 'The Rising' was taken by me at the Kensico Dam Plaza on a November 2006 bicycle ride.
During the year, the 60-foot in diameter base for The Rising, the Westchester 9/11 memorial was completed. This Circle of Remembrance was dedicated on September 11, 2005. The monument was completed in 2006 consisting of a group of gleaming stainless steel spires soaring more than 80 feet toward the sky. It commemorates the 109 county residents of Westchester who perished in the terrorist attacks. The monument was dedicated on the fifth anniversary of the tragedy.
Kensico Dam Plaza, a giant tree-lined town square at the base of the 300-foot-tall dam, is located in the heart of Westchester County in Valhalla and hosts dozens of important events. The location and its importance as a gathering place for our community have made Kensico Westchester's "Central Park." This spot is one of my favorite mountain bike destinations. There is a paved and unpaved path to the Dam which is a picturesque trail. In the 1980's - late 90's I also used this trail for some of my marathon run training. I ride to the Kensico Dam Plaza often, the foliage takes my breath away, especially during the Fall season.
