As you already know a group of UN Pensioners from India made a proposal to UNJSPF for restoration of full pension for those who took the lump-sum. The India argument was that once the actuarial age of life expectancy was reached the full pension should be paid to retirees as the lump-sum was effectively paid back. The India Pensioner proposal has been rejected, please see letter from UNJSPF. A note on this subject has been posted by the UN Pension group on the front pages of the website www.unjustice.org; please see UN Pension Lump-sum - reduction to be restored.
When my views were requested by the India Pension Group, I disagreed with their proposal in: Does long life qualify reinstatement of full pension for those who availed the lumpsum option? My views have not changed and I agree with the UNJSPF position. However,if any of you agree with the India proposal, you can express your views to the Registrar, UN Appeals Tribunal, UN Secretariat, New York, NY 10017, USA, Email [email protected].

Dear Merrill,
Do you remember we worked together in Bangladesh, a long while ago now? I have finally retired to England after 25 years in Mozambique. I worked there with UNICEF for three years, then with the government, then with the national university, then in later years on my own.
I worked finally for many years in a village helping young people to set up and operate a little workshop and a sort of museum to provide practical experience on science and technology using local resources to make and demonstrate a wide range of interesting and useful things. We demonstrated practical school science, mostly Physics, and devices useful to homes and communities such as small wind generators, solar cookers, water pumps and so on. An enjoyable life, despite difficulties.
I have read information on you on the Internet, so I know a bit about what you are doing.
I’d like your help on a small matter. What tax should I be paying here in England on my UN pension? The Excise and Customs tax authorities here do not seem to know much about it and I’m now due to pay it, but I don’t know if it is right. Julie and I also have a small government pension.
I have asked the London office of UNICEF about this matter but they say they have no information on this. I have looked up advice on the Internet pages on the UN Pensions Fund, but I can’t find what I need.
My UN pension is issued in dollars so that the monthly amount (2091.13USD) varies according to the exchange rate. Over the year 08/09 it averaged out to UK£ 1,312 per month. My Pension Fund reference is 29383.
Julie and I lived in Mozambique for 26 years, returning to the UK on Feb 10th 2008.
Could you help me or point me to the information I want?
All the best,
Keith.
Keith Warren.

Great Article! Really helps the beginner blogger, like myself, choose a direction that isn’t either too simplistic nor complicated.
